You Can Help Honor the Industry’s Best

Do you know a colleague, peer, or industry leader whose contributions merit special recognition?  These important awards are accepting nominations.

Industry awards do more than honor the selected individuals; they shine a light on qualities that the professionals within that industry admire. They also reward and reinforce innovation, service, and leadership, all of which help secure a stronger future for the industries served.

Four of the pulp, paper, and packaging industry’s most prestigious awards are now accepting 2018 nominations. All are part of the TAPPI/PIMA Awards Program, which has been honoring our industry’s best for almost 90 years. The Nominating and Honors Committee—made up of leaders from within the industry—has just selected the 2017 recipients for these awards; these individuals will be honored at PaperCon, April 23-26, in Minneapolis, MN.

Nominations for the 2018 awards will be accepted through August 1, 2017. For complete criteria and nomination forms, visit tappi.org and click the “Get Involved” tab; or email [email protected].

For Scientific Innovation:

Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal

The TAPPI Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award is TAPPI’s highest honor. Established in 1928, the Gold Medal is granted to those “who have made preeminent scientific and engineering achievements of proven applied benefit to the world’s pulp, paper, board, and forest product industries.” The forest product industries include forestry, derived products, their process technology, and their applications.

Since 1984, the Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal has been accompanied by a cash honorarium worth between US$60,000 – US$80,000 thanks to a generous donation by distinguished paper industry engineer Gunnar W. E. Nicholson. This award can honor an individual or a group of individuals working together.

For Business Leadership:

PIMA Executive of the Year

The Executive of the Year Award is traditionally presented to a senior-level executive in the pulp, paper, or converting industries for excellence in management and outstanding contributions to the industry as a whole. Established in 1966, this award has recognized some of our industry’s most influential leaders.

For Service Leadership:

Herman Joachim Distinguished
Service Award

The Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor TAPPI can bestow upon an individual for exemplary leadership that has significantly contributed to the advancement of the association.

Since 1994, the award has been accompanied by a cash honorarium of between US$60,000 – US$80,000 thanks to a generous gift from Herman L. Joachim, a TAPPI member for more than 70 years. He joined TAPPI while working as a chemist at the Bogalusa Paper Company; he later managed paper mills throughout the US and was responsible for expansions and modernizations in the industry.

For Local Leadership:

Paul Magnabosco Outstanding Local Section Member Award

The Paul W. Magnabosco Outstanding Local Section Member Award recognizes outstanding leadership and exceptional service to one or more TAPPI Local Sections.

The nominee must be an individual whose outstanding leadership and exceptional service in Local Section activities have resulted in significant and measurable benefits to Section members. The contributions may be through a single activity or through an accruement of longtime efforts.
