Miron Construction, Voith and KSG Solutions to Begin Work on Green Bay Packaging’s New Capital Investment Project

GREEN BAY, Wis. (July 26, 2018) — Miron Construction Co., Inc., Voith, and KSH Solutions Inc. have begun design, engineering, and construction on the largest business development project in the history of Brown County, Wisconsin—Green Bay Packaging’s new paper mill.

This facility will replace the current, 71-year-old mill in the existing location in Green Bay. It will be the first new paper mill constructed in Wisconsin in more than 30 years. This $500 million investment will create 1,000 construction jobs and will require approximately 1.5 million labor hours. The new facility is expected to be operational in early 2021.

“We, at Miron Construction, are extremely excited and honored to serve as the trusted design-build partner of Green Bay Packaging on their recently announced project. Their decision to make this long-term investment in our community truly speaks to the heart and soul of the organization. Their commitment will benefit Green Bay, the northeast Wisconsin region, and the entire state of Wisconsin for many years to come. We look forward to continued planning and design progress in the coming months, with initial construction activities scheduled to begin yet this fall,” stated Tim Kippenhan, vice president and COO of Miron.

Once operational, Green Bay Packaging will produce significantly more paper. The new facility will house a paper production line that produces 300-inch wide packaging paper. Full-system partner, Voith Paper, whose North American headquarters is based in Wisconsin, and MERI Environmental Solutions (a Voith company), will complete the installation of an effluent treatment plan, BlueLine stock preparation, Wet End Process, XcelLine paper machine and a VariFlex Performance winder. The package also includes paper machine clothing, a seven-year Total Roll Management contract for several machines, and Papermaking 4.0 products.

“Partnering with Green Bay Packaging is a perfect fit and we appreciate the opportunity to work together to provide a world-class paper operation,” said Martin Jauch, president of business line projects for Voith Paper North America. “This is the first time in United States paper history that a project with the breadth of supply and scope was delivered by a single-source company. The Green Bay project award will benefit not only the industry, but also the 300 dedicated workers we have in Wisconsin.”

KSH Solutions Inc. has been selected as the engineering partner for the project and will provide detailed engineering, procurement, and field engineering services to Miron.

“KSH is extremely proud to be selected as the engineering partner for this important and strategic investment by Green Bay Packaging. The new mill will incorporate technology that will allow Green Bay Packaging to continue to be a leader in producing environmentally friendly, high-quality packaging products cost effectively,” says Martin Pereira, president of KSH Solutions Inc.

In addition, the new facility will include an OCC plant, a bio-digester, and automated dense roll storage distribution facility. Coal burners will be replaced with modern gas boilers, reclaimed water will be used in lieu of freshwater, and there will be no discharge into natural waterways. Ultimately, the new facility will produce significantly less greenhouse gas emissions than the original into the atmosphere.
