See the Best—or Be the Best

From veteran packaging company standouts to student efforts, from production run samples to one-of-a-kind designer dreams, the 2024 Box Manufacturing Olympics (BMO) will showcase everything our industry has to offer.

TAPPI’s CorrPak Competition and AICC’s Design Competition have joined forces to create this expansive, industry-wide event. BMO is open to all TAPPI and AICC members from around the globe who produce corrugated, rigid box, and folding cartons, as well as their suppliers. Packaging schools and universities are also invited to participate in the competition and have their own categories and requirements.

The only place to see this incredible collection of entries—and to judge them for yourself—will be in Orlando, FL, September 9-12, at SuperCorrExpo®. Entries are being accepted through June 28, 2024.

According to Cordes Porcher, competition chairman, the benefits of entering the BMO are twofold. “The benefit I hope packaging companies recognize the most is the very public opportunity to recognize internal staff. It is a great morale booster for a manufacturing team to win this award, or even to know that management has nominated something they worked on,” he says. “Additionally, there is the marketing opportunity that comes from your company being recognized as an award winner.”

Judges will evaluate entries on a number of levels, including design, quality, graphic excellence, technical difficulty, and innovative application, among others. All entries will be prominently displayed during SuperCorrExpo and winners will be announced each day preceding the opening session, with the Best of the Industry winners being announced on the last day. Judging and entry details for all 42 categories are available at supercorrexpo.org. Awards will include the following:

  • Medal Awards: Judges will award Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in all categories.
  • Best of the Industry: This will be chosen from the Gold Medal winners in the qualifying categories.
  • 2024 SuperCorrExpo Attendees’ Choice: All categories are eligible for the Attendees’ Choice award, which will be voted on by SuperCorrExpo attendees during show hours.
Competition Criteria

The Box Manufacturing Olympics is open to ALL corrugated, rigid box, and folding carton manufacturers and their suppliers worldwide that are TAPPI or AICC members. With 14 Corrugated categories, 15 Folding Carton categories, and 13 Rigid Box categories to choose from, every company or packaging school/university should be able to find its niche for a shot at the gold and the ultimate prize: Best of the Industry.

While specific rules of entry vary by category, overall criteria require that entries must be composed of at least 50 percent paper or corrugated paper (unless otherwise noted). Entries must represent packaging manufactured and/or sold for commercial use between June 1, 2020 and June 1, 2024. BMO competition judges are industry experts representing diverse fields within the industry. This year’s judges have a combined 537 years of industry experience.

Will YOU Bring Home the Gold?

Entry forms and entry registration can be completed online at supercorrexpo.org/bmo. The entry form must be filled out completely. Closer to the date of the event, the committee will email information to all registrants on when and where to ship packages and displays. There is an entry fee of US$250 for first entry and US$50 per additional entry. Student entries are free. Each company location may enter more than one design per category.

Greg Arvanigian, CEO with Arvco Container, has seen first-hand how the whole team benefits from this kind of recognition: Arvco’s competition entry at SuperCorrExpo 2016 received the “Attendee’s Favorite” award. “Sometimes designers don’t get the credit they deserve. Graphic designers, software designers—they do a lot of the work, but the sales guys get to reap a lot of the recognition. It’s nice to give our designers a little bit of notoriety outside the company,” he says.
